There are eight (8) traffic control cards available within Victoria, each authorised by VicRoads. In order to obtain a card, you must complete a training course for the skill set applicable to the card. We can provide you with training for :-

• Traffic Controller (TC1 and TC2) – controlling traffic with a stop-slow bat or portable traffic control devices
• Traffic Management Implementer (TMI1, TMI2 & TMI3) – setting up and packing up temporary signs and devices
• Traffic Management Designer (TMD1) – design and develop traffic control plans (TCP’s) and traffic management plans (TMP’s) for category 1 roads

We recommend that if you are planning to undertake either a TCR or TMI course, that you upgrade to the Combo course to obtain both cards and qualifications at the same time to improve your employability in the traffic management industry.

You must hold a White Card in order to obtain any of the traffic management cards

At the completion of your training course you will receive a logbook that will entitle you to commence work placement immediately. You will not receive your card until you have completed the work placement and assessment requirements for that card. Licences4Work will issue your VicRoads card upon successful assessment.

• Traffic Controller (TC1 or TC2) – If you hold a TC card you can control traffic using a stop-slow bat or a temporary device such as a portable boom gate, however you are unable to set up the worksite or pack it down at the end of the shift.
• Traffic Management Implementer (TMI1, TMI2 or TMI3) – If you hold this card you can set up and pack up temporary signs and devices for a traffic control site, however you cannot control traffic with a stop-slow bat or portable traffic control devices.
• Traffic Management Designer (TMD1, TMD2 or TMD3) – If you hold this card you can design and develop traffic control plans (TCP’s- also known as traffic guidance schemes) and traffic management plans (TMP’s). This card does not enable you to perform the duties of either of the other two cards.

VicRoads Traffic Management cards for the new skillsets will expire 3 years after they were issued.

• Yes, your qualifications will be recognised if:
  1. You hold a current TTM card (your card has not expired or is within 3 years of the issue date) from interstate.
  2. A statement of attainment as evidence of completion for:
     • RIIWHS302E – Implement Traffic Management Plans
     • RIIWHS205E – Control Traffic With Stop/Slow Bat
     • RIICWD503 – Prepare traffic management plans and traffic guidance schemes (TMD only)
  3. Successful completion of the localised content training with an Approved Training Provider (Licences 4 Work).
• In order to continue to work in the TTM industry in Victoria, you will need to complete the new TTM National Training course before your current card expires. Further information can be found on the VicRoads website. Note: if a person has the current tickets and can show that it is valid (not yet expired or still within 3 years from the issue date), they can work in VIC on all road categories. However, it will be up to the employer (the TMC) to ensure their employees are compliant with points 1 to 3 above.

• This only gains you a Statement of Attainment for RIIWHS302E, not the skillset required for Temporary Traffic Management (TTM) work. In order to work in the TTM industry you must complete the TMI1 course. This qualification will only be recognised by VicRoads for 3 years from the date of issue, and you will then need to complete a renewal course. If you already hold the unit RIIWHS302E issued prior to 1st March 2024, you will need to renew within 2 years of the date of issue.

• Yes, your qualifications will be recognised if:

• Victorian workers who hold the previously accepted Statement of Attainment approval will need to undertake the full course to gain the additional units of competency in the new skillsets. It may be possible to RPL some components for existing workers.

Traffic control pay rates vary, depending on age, experience and type of work being conducted.

There are many companies performing traffic control work across Victoria. A lot of traffic employees over the years have held temporary work visas, resulting in high turnover and thus positions becoming available regularly.

• Traffic Control companies regularly advertise looking for qualified workers on various jobseeker websites across Australia.
• In addition, you can simply search for a local traffic control company and enquire if they have positions available.

• A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is a reference number that creates an online record of your training and qualifications attained in Australia.
• If you are a new or continuing student undertaking nationally recognised training, you need a USI in order to receive your qualification or statement of attainment. Go to usi.gov.au to create a new one or access/update your details.
